Dr. Karl R. Koerner
Dr. Koerner is a general dentist who performs only oral surgery treatment. In the past decade he has removed wisdom teeth from over 14,000 patients – nearly all with IV sedation. He also does many other procedures such as bone grafts, implants, extractions other than wisdom teeth, apicoectomies, biopsies, selected periodontal procedures and other related things.
When “put out” or sedated for Dr. Koerner’s surgery, it is done by a separate person – someone whose total responsibility is the comfort and safety of the patient. When the patient awakes, there is no remembrance of the event and postoperative medications help maintain a good comfort level while reducing swelling and other potential complications.
As a special service to patients, he works primarily in the offices of other Utah dentists. In this way, patients remain where they are familiar with the office surroundings, staff, and billing practices. Any minor complications can be followed-up with the patient’s family dentist but Dr. Koerner is always available if anything more serious should arise.
Dr. Koerner graduated from Utah State University and then dental school from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in Seattle. He completed a General Practice Residency in the U.S. Army which is where he became adept at the surgery procedures he now performs. Dr. Koerner has written four books on oral surgery which are used by other dentists throughout the world. Some have been published in Spanish, German, Korean, and Chinese. He has written many articles on surgery and also produced several video presentations to help in training other clinicians. In 2010, he received The Academy of General Dentistry's Weclew Award for his contributions to general dentistry and dental education.
Dr. Koerner is sought after as a speaker for dental groups, having taught over 800 times at such meetings as the American Dental Association Annual Session, Greater New York, the prestigious Hinman Meeting in Atlanta, the Yankee Meeting in Boston, and California Dental Association Meetings in San Francisco and Anaheim.
